Chapter 34 in which we stay near lake Ohrid and try North Macedonian cuisine

Our next stop was Lake Ohrid. It is ancient, one of Europe’s deepest and oldest lakes. Ohrid lake is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. That’s enough of encyclopaedic facts, we will skip to the part most important for travellers – the lake is extremely beautiful and is worth visiting.

Our accommodation was a strange place. It was a guest house with multiple rooms and a shared kitchen in the backyard.

The place was newly built and not completely finished. When we arrived (late as usual), there was no one around. The owner came in 10 minutes and showed us to our room. In the middle of the night another family arrived, they left before we got up in the morning. No one else stayed in the guest house during our two days there.

What could be better than trying amazing local food in the new country? Only combining it with the perfect view! No, we are not going to use advertising booklet language 😀, but the restaurant „Domakjinska kukja Velestovo“ really offers both at once.

It takes quite a ride up the mountain to get there, but the result is worth it.

We tried homemade sheep cheese, traditional Macedonian pie, Ohrid country style pie and Tavche Gravche.

Tavche Gravche – one of the most traditional North Macedonia dishes – is served on a fry pan (tava). Beans with various addons like lamb or sausages or just vegetables are first cooked on the stove and then simmered in the oven for several hours.

Of course, we used the opportunity to fly our drone from a high point.
