Bumps, Bends, Mixed Up Plans

"A wizard does not make mistakes. He makes unexpected possibilities." – Merlin

Chapter 12 in which we visit yet another castle in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and finally reach Serbia, but…

After our unexpected yet pleasant vacation in Croatia we returned to our initial plan. We found cheap accommodation in a small Serbian town. The price was 350€ per month for a single bedroom apartment with an additional sofa bed in the living room. We envisaged a quiet life with walks in the nearby park, massage and physiotherapy to continue post-COVID rehabilitation. Basically, we were going to take a break and figure out what to do next. With all that on our minds we were crossing into Bosnia and Herzegovina (it was the shortest route).

There were two castles on our way in Bosnia, one close to Croatia and the other one close to Serbia. It was impossible to visit them both in one day, so we headed to Ostrožac Castle (less than an hour drive from the Croatian border crossing).

The Ostrožac fortress was built in XIII century. It is not preserved as well as the Dubovac Castle in Croatia. The old keep and towers are significantly destroyed, but the fortress walls are still standing and the kill field in front of the main gates is as intimidating as centuries ago.

The new castle was built in the very beginning of the XX century outside of the fortress walls, but now it is in poor condition too.

There is an exhibition of sculptures in the castle garden. Look at the adorable white puppy over there.

You can walk on the castle wall – the view is magnificent. Just remember, that your safety is your concern. There are no guarding rails on either side of the wall.

Entry fee is 2€. Coffee, water and toilets are available within the fortress walls.

As usually we arrived at a new place when it was already dark. We met the owner of the apartment and BUMPS, BENDS, MIXED UP PLANS! He said that our apartments were still occupied, but he arranged for us another place to stay for two days… for just 22€ per night.

We did not like it, but we usually try to play nice. Anyway, it was almost 11 p.m., Denis was falling asleep and we agreed to this deal.
