Bumps, Bends, Mixed Up Plans

"A wizard does not make mistakes. He makes unexpected possibilities." – Merlin

Chapter 3 in which everything is going according to the plan

We had a perfect plan: we wake up, all our belongings are packed, movers come on time, we quickly load everything into their van, go to the storage facility, come back and off we go. We spend a night in Poland, then on the second day of our trip we drive in relaxed mode.

Of course, we also had a back up plan. Plan B: we wake up, pack those little things we left for the last moment,.. to the storage,.. spend a night in Lithuania and have a less relaxed ride the following day. By lunch time it became clear that this plan wouldn’t work as well. Those little things kept coming and filling a bag after bag.

The plan C: SNAFU. We somehow finish packing, leave Tallinn and spend a night in Riga, Latvia. We have a pretty intense ride the next day.

The plan that actually worked was plan D. Who cares about the next day when we need to survive this one?! We leave when we leave and spend the night somewhere in Estonia. We considered staying one more night in Tallinn sleeping on the bare floor, but decided it was too extreme.

We considered ourselves experienced home movers. We knew that the initial time estimation must be doubled, sometimes tripled, but we had to fit into the initial figure. Normally when moving house you would be able to organize a proper paid service or ask friends for help. Since we only moved to Tallinn less than three months ago we did not have friends close enough to ask for favors. On such a short notice we were lucky to find movers ready to come on weekend. However, don’t be afraid to ask for help. After we posted a request to a local Facebook group several people offered to come and help for free (and we received plenty of moral support). Looking back we realize we could have used more help from the people who offered it if we weren’t so shy to accept it.

Anyway, at the end of the day (literally, at 10 pm) we managed to leave Tallinn and the journey began.

Goodbye, Tallinn
